Like a Child

My husband told me a story once about a conversation he had with a preschool boy.

The little boy said to him, "Ya know what? You can never play hide-and-seek with God."

My husband replied, "Is that right?"

"Yes," the boy insisted, "because God always knows where you are."

My husband chuckled, knowing the little boy was right on point.

Ya know, I've heard my husband tell that story many times to people and it makes me laugh because he knows a lot about the Bible and could tell people all kinds of insights he knows. But it's funny how the simplest revelations are the ones that stick with us the most, not the complicated philosophies. It's the childlike ones we like to retell. It's the simple ones that travel the deepest. Just like a seed. It finds its way down into the soil of our hearts and from there it grows. But, it comes to us so unassuming often times. It's simple and can even be overlooked. But when we let the seed get deep into us, it grows and gets a grip on us. It latches its roots to us, changing us from the inside out. (see Matthew 13:1-23)

We must remember that every childlike teaching is the starting point for the deeper things. No Kindergartener starts out learning Algebra on the first day of school or how to read Shakespeare by the second week. No, they start with their ABC's and 123's. And from there, the simple grows into the deeper.

And that approach will never change in the classroom of God. See, He's not interested in stuffing you with just a bunch of head knowledge. His end game is deeper than that! He's interested in winning your whole heart! He's interested in showing you who He is. He's interested in showing you who you are! He's interested in perfecting your faith so much that you will believe Him for anything

So don't overlook the simplicity of Jesus' teachings. They remind us that God still calls us kids. And He knows the best way to reach us is often with childlike concepts.

In the words of Jesus himself:

"Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” Mark‬ ‭10‬:‭15‬ ‭NIV‬‬

People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.
