We're Just Here For The Cotton Candy

It's easy to get sucked into and hard to tune out as you hear one man yell, "Popcorn! Get your popcorn!" And another one shouting, "Ice cold soda! Refreshing cola!" over another worker saying,"Sno-Cones for sale! Pick your flavor!" Kids can't even sit in their seats properly as their attention is being thrown left and right with all the offers being shouted.

They grab their parent's pant leg, not taking their eyes off the goodies being displayed, and beg, "Oh mommy! Please let me have a sno-cone! And can I also have a cotton candy and a light-up neon wand?"

Parents suddenly feel like lion tamers themselves, trying to control their cubs."You can pick one thing." they say, trying to pull away from their child's clench. But remember, we are not at the circus just to eat. We're here to see the stars of the show. They are the main event."

The Christian life is exciting and fun. At times, it can feel like we're at the circus as we take in all the blessings God is lavishing on us. We are enthralled with His goodness like a kid mesmerized by the cotton candy and sno-cones. And though all these things are wonderful and good, and God wants us to enjoy them all, we must be careful to keep proper perspective in all of it.

We must remember that God doesn't 'take us to the circus' just to 'eat cotton candy'. Those things are just an added benefit to what we're really there to see - Him in action! Jesus is and should always be the main event in our lives. He is the 'Star' of every 'show'.  And we must be careful that He is not displaced as front and center in our hearts by lesser things (though they may, themselves, be good). Nothing should upstage Him. Not our wealth. Not our success. Not our careers. Not our possessions. Not the applause of man. Not Signs and Wonders. Not our giftings. Not another person. Not even our callings or ministries.

We must keep the main thing the main thing. He is the One we are keeping our eyes on throughout the 'show'. He is the One who is wowing us and bringing us to our feet in applause. He is the reason we came to the 'circus' in the first place! And without Him, simply put, there would be no 'show'.
