On Pitch
So, if you don't know, I'm a music teacher. Private piano and voice. When someone comes to me to learn how to sing I don't start with getting them to sing louder. Louder doesn't mean better. My first goal is getting them aligned with pitch, the correct pitch. Getting them to hear a pitch on the piano and be able to match it and sing in tune. In tune. It's one of the biggest things that people notice when they listen to someone sing. Even if they are not musically talented people. The average person can sense when someone is out of tune.
And, that's how it is in spiritual things, too. Aligning with pitch is important. When we first come to God, one of His first goals is to get us aligned. Aligned with His pitch. Aligned with His voice. Walking to His tune...hearing it and singing it back to Him.
How do we do that? Well,
1) We read the Bible. A version that is accurate and easy for us to comprehend. His Word is foundational and will teach us the 'pitches to His song'. His songs are beautiful!
2) Spend time talking to Him. Know that when we speak, He hears us. Ask questions. And wait to hear His voice. Learn how He speaks to you. Glean from your Bible reading what He is saying to you.
3) Bend to the leading of His Spirit throughout your day. Ya know, sometimes, when two people sing together, one person is in tune and the other is not. There is a working together in that moment when the singer that is off pitch must bend to the one who is on pitch. If not, you're going to get some bad dissonance! Same goes with the Spirit. We must learn when we are 'rubbing up against His pitch' with dissonance. And we must be humble enough to admit that God is always on pitch, so if anyone needs to yield it's us! lol It has taken me years to learn this with God (and still learning!). I would feel 'the rub' when I would say things that were not nice or do things that were not with integrity. His Spirit would gently 'sing the right pitches' to Me and I had to choose if I was going to bend to His Voice or continue on with my terrible singing. haha. Yeah, when I look back, I think I probably sang out of tune more than in tune half the time. But I have learned and am learning how to sing better with His help and continuous pursuit of Him. Thank God He never gives up on me because of my slow learning process! haha!
So our question (s) today is this:
How's your 'singing voice'? Are you learning to 'sing in tune'? Are you going to the 'Ultimate Vocal Coach' to learn how?
God doesn't expect us to learn how to sing in tune by ourselves. He simply asks us to join Him in His song. That's all. From there, He knows just the right steps to get us perfectly tuned up!
