Do That Thing You Do
I had a conversation once with my husband about pursuing God's will for his life. He told me that when he was younger, his understanding of going after God's will would mean he wouldn't enjoy it very much. Basically, if he wanted to follow God, it was going to involve things he didn't want to do. To an extent, I think that's true. The Bible says to pick up our cross and follow Him. There are things we're going to need to be willing to do and give up to follow Jesus. I mean, when I first got saved, I knew I had to break up with a boyfriend because that wasn't God's best for me (and not long after obeying God and breaking ties with that guy, His best came along and I met Bryan, my husband!)
But, this is not what my husband meant. He meant he thought God would erase all fun from his life and basically make his life hard and joyless and make him do things he wasn't interested in doing.
Good grief!
Honestly, if that's not a religious mindset, I don't know what is. That's just awful! God is interested in doing the exact OPPOSITE of that thinking! In fact, Jesus Himself said in John 10 that He came to give life and life to the fullest! (But, notice it’s the devil who wants to steal, kill and destroy! Hmmm!)
I am the Door; anyone who enters through Me will be saved [and will live forever], and will go in and out [freely], and find pasture (spiritual security). The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows]. I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His [own] life for the sheep. [Ps 23; Is 40:11]
John 10:9-11 AMP
God made us. He wired us to think a certain way. He crafted us to do certain things. He gifted us with talents and unique skills. And He gave us the desire to do those things and find great joy in those things! So His will in our lives will probably include the things that give us joy! Can you imagine if He told a fish not to swim, even though He made the fish to do just that??
NOTE: God's plan does not include sinful things, though. This is where we must be aware that His will is wrapped in holiness. We can't say, "God created me to outwit the authorities and gave me a talent to rob banks." haha! no.
The beautiful thing about being in Christ is that we find out who we are as NEW CREATIONS -- forgiven and washed and consecrated to Him. He WANTS us to discover who we are IN HIM! And that includes the talents He has given us and our desires that go with them. He calls us, saves us, washes us and then says, "Now, darling, what do you love to do? What gives you joy? What do you dream about? Ask Me about those things! And I might also show you some things I have made you for, but you don't know it yet! haha! And we can go into it together! And in the process, I will shine My light through you for all the world to see! What a marvelous plan!"
What makes you smile?
What makes you happy?
To skip a mile?
Or maybe feel fancy?
What makes you smile
the whole while?
Oh, what makes
your grey skies turn blue
and makes you turn
a cartwheel or two?
What makes you feel
like you're
brand-spankin' new?
Then it's time to
do that thing you do!
That thing you love to do!
Let your dreams consume you!
Let your heart run free and wild!
Though it might not be
what you're used to!
You're used to being told what to do since you’ve been a child.
But, freedom is
looking good on you
and it's time to step out
in this new style and go
do that thing you do!
Go do what you love to do,
My child!
