Spit on Me
In Mark chapter 8, we read about a blind man who was brought to Jesus. The people that brought him begged Jesus to restore the man's vision. Jesus was more than happy to do so. But interestingly, He did not heal him instantly right there on the spot. Instead, He removed the man from his surroundings (took him outside the village) and did something extremely unconventional. Are you ready for this? He spit on the man's eyes! Did you hear that? Jesus spit on the him! EW and lol! What?! I can't say my doctor has ever tried that approach!
But it was the perfect approach for this man. It was exactly what was needed for this man. He literally needed the very substance of Jesus to make him well. He didn't need people yelling over him and casting out demons. He didn't need a lecture on healing or why he was even blind to begin with. He needed the very essence of Jesus to touch the area he probably thought could never ever be whole (like NEVER.) He needed Jesus' DNA going into him and His hand placed on top of Him -- internal and external contact with the God of Life, with Life itself. And when that happened, everything changed for this man. Instantly? No. But gradually, with continued contact with the Savior, he was COMPLETELY and 100% healed.
Today's thought is this: What part of you is like this blind man? Is there a part of you that is broken that you believe can never be fixed?
What's interesting about this blind man is that he was not the one to beg for his healing. Other people asked Jesus to heal him. But why? Did the man resolve in his heart that this was just the way it would always be? Was there NO hope and therefore no reason to even ask Jesus himself? I'm so sad to think that could be his story. But it was not the end of his story either! Thank God for people around him that had the faith to bring him to the Healer. And I love that the man, though he didn't ask for healing himself, did not resist Jesus' instructions for how He planned to do it. He must have believed enough to at least walk through the process with Him. Maybe the man figured, "What do I have to lose?"
And that is exactly it and exactly what we can tell ourselves about bringing our broken 'unfixable' parts to Jesus. What do we have to lose?
So what do you have to lose today? (other than maybe some pride :) Be brave and bring the broken parts to Him. Or tell someone, who knows Jesus, about your broken parts and ask if they will help you get to Him. Just do yourself a favor and don't write Jesus off too quickly. He might want to spit on you, too. ;)
***
When they arrived at Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man to Jesus, and they begged him to touch the man and heal him. Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. Then, spitting on the man’s eyes, he laid his hands on him and asked, “Can you see anything now?”
The man looked around. “Yes,” he said, “I see people, but I can’t see them very clearly. They look like trees walking around.”
Then Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes again, and his eyes were opened. His sight was completely restored, and he could see everything clearly. Jesus sent him away, saying, “Don’t go back into the village on your way home.”
