When the Funeral Music Plays
The crowd assumed it was over. They assumed because well -- it seemed obvious to everyone. The girl was dead. So they started the music. The funeral music. The music that announces death.
But what everyone didn't know is that Jesus was alerted. A request was made. And Jesus was on the scene.
His own announcement sounded ludicrous to those who were only seeing with their natural eyes. They laughed at Him when He announced LIFE. In their ignorance they dismissed Him.
But Jesus didn't pause or halt. He wasn't discouraged by the tune they were playing for He was moving to a different sound. He was moving to the sound of His Father's voice. He was moving to the pulse of a prayer spoken in faith. And that is all He needed.
And so He stopped the music of death. He put the crowd outside. Any sound or voice that bred unbelief was silenced. Jesus understood that you can not declare death when there is still life. And He was not putting up with false declarations -- not when there was still hope, not when the reality was the very opposite of what they were declaring!
And then it happened. Suddenly it was all made clear. One touch from Jesus was all it took to make it obvious to everyone.
And oh how the crowd changed their tune. How different the report they told! Instead of death tunes, the music of life "swept through the entire countryside"!
There was no more funeral music that day, only the song of celebration!

As Jesus was saying this, the leader of a synagogue came and knelt before him.
"My daughter has just died,” he said, “but you can bring her back to life again if you just come and lay your hand on her.” So Jesus and his disciples got up and went with him...
When Jesus arrived at the official’s home, he saw the noisy crowd and heard the funeral music.
“Get out!” he told them. “The girl isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.” But the crowd laughed at him. After the crowd was put outside, however, Jesus went in and took the girl by the hand, and she stood up! The report of this miracle swept through the entire countryside.”
